The Difference Pediatric Dentistry Makes

Our goal is to ensure that children begin their dental journey on the right path with kid-friendly pediatric dental care. This approach fosters a positive relationship between the dental team and the young patient, making children feel engaged and empowered to take care of their oral health. Establishing happy and healthy habits early on sets the foundation for a lifetime of dental care that they will actually look forward to.

From the very first appointment, pediatric dental care achieves this through routine teeth cleanings tailored for kids and at every significant milestone. We are delighted to support young patients as they navigate new experiences such as discovering their first teeth, losing baby teeth, growing adult teeth, and facing common procedures like fillings or choosing orthodontics as they grow into young adults.

Why is Children’s Dental Care So Important?

It might surprise you, but some people question the importance of children’s dental care since primary teeth eventually fall out. By the age of 3, most children have all their baby teeth. This initial set of teeth starts to fall out around age 6, and aside from wisdom teeth, children typically have all their adult teeth by their early teens. These formative years, when children are gaining and losing their primary teeth, are crucial because their dental health during this period has lasting impacts on their overall well-being.

Poor Dental Health Hurts

Children, similar to adults, are vulnerable to tooth decay, sensitivity, infections, and gum disease. Even though they might not have a point of comparison, kids can often adapt to significant pain and discomfort. They still experience it just as intensely. If your child avoids hot or cold foods, has trouble with chewy foods, or chews only on one side of their mouth, it might be a sign they’re dealing with dental pain or sensitivity.

Baby Teeth Set the Stage for Adult Teeth

When a baby tooth becomes loose and falls out, its root is reabsorbed, creating a space that guides the incoming adult tooth. If a baby tooth is extracted too early, it can lead to issues such as crowding or misalignment of adult teeth. Ensuring that baby teeth and the surrounding gums remain healthy provides the best foundation for strong and properly aligned adult teeth.

The Cornerstone of Confidence

Strong and healthy teeth are vital for children as they learn to articulate and smile. Early childhood is a critical time for forming bonds and developing social skills. Dental problems, such as pain or sensitivity, can interfere with a child’s ability to communicate and affect how they are viewed by others. Ensuring good oral health is key to fostering confidence and positive social interactions.

Good Eating Habits for Growing Bodies

A diverse diet is crucial for children and can be particularly challenging for parents with picky eaters. When children experience dental pain or discomfort, they may avoid crunchy, chewy, or textured foods. This can lead to habits such as eating on one side of the mouth, using the wrong part of their mouth, or even eating less overall. Ensuring good dental health helps children maintain healthy eating habits essential for their growth and development.

Your Child’s First Appointment

Our primary focus for patients of all ages is their well-being, comfort, and satisfaction. Pediatric dentistry requires special attention to the unique needs of our young patients. We carefully track oral health milestones and communicate with children in a way that is both friendly and reassuring, ensuring they feel safe and involved during their visit.

Show and Tell

Children respond differently to new experiences; some are naturally curious and full of questions, while others may feel shy or anxious. Our aim is to ensure that every child feels safe, engaged, and positive about their dental visit. We start each appointment by listening to their thoughts and concerns, explaining our procedures in a way that is easy for them to understand, and answering any questions they might have. This approach helps children feel more comfortable and confident about their dental care.

Gentle Examination

Focusing on the specific needs of children, we conduct a careful examination of your child’s gums, tongue, teeth, and overall oral health. We track the development of their baby and adult teeth, identifying any issues or areas that may need additional care at home or in future visits. This thorough approach ensures we address any concerns early and effectively.

Keeping You in the Loop

After the examination, we provide guidance for both the young patient and their parent or guardian. We often share tips and tricks to make brushing those tricky spots easier at home. We’ll inform you of any areas that need monitoring and what to watch for between appointments. Working together, we can ensure your child’s oral health is well taken care of!

Contact us today

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pediatric dentistry is a specialized branch of dental care focused on the oral health of infants, children, and adolescents. It involves understanding and addressing the unique dental needs of children, from their first baby teeth through to their permanent adult teeth. Pediatric dentists are trained to provide preventive care, diagnose and treat dental issues, and guide children and their parents on proper oral hygiene practices to ensure a healthy smile for life.

It is recommended to take your child to the dentist by their first birthday or within six months after their first tooth appears, whichever comes first. Early dental visits help establish a dental home, where your child can become familiar with the dentist and the dental office. These initial visits also allow the dentist to monitor your child’s oral development, provide guidance on proper oral hygiene, and address any early signs of dental issues.

Children typically stop seeing a pediatric dentist when they reach their late teens, around the age of 18. However, the exact age can vary based on individual needs and circumstances. Pediatric dentists are trained to address the unique dental concerns of children and adolescents, so they are well-equipped to handle dental care through these formative years. Once a child transitions to adulthood, they can move to a general dentist who continues to provide comprehensive dental care.

Toddlers should visit the dentist every six months to monitor oral health, prevent problems, and establish good hygiene habits early on. More frequent visits may be recommended for specific dental concerns.

Hello Everyone, After living in our town for over 20 years, relocating has certainly been a challenge, particularly when it came to finding a new dental practice that met our expectations. Our previous dentist's office was excellent, but after it was sold, we began our search for a new provider. After visiting two different offices, we finally discovered Affinity Dental Studio, and we are thrilled with our decision. Located conveniently on Bathurst, the office is not only easy to find but also beautifully designed, with state-of-the-art facilities that exude sophistication. From the moment you walk in, Chantel greets you with a warm smile, making you feel instantly comfortable and welcomed. For an exceptional cleaning, Andrea is the person to see. Her attention to detail and thoroughness ensures the best possible experience, all while maintaining a friendly and pleasant demeanor. Dr. Alina, the talented dentist, truly stands out. She is incredibly kind, approachable, and brings a sense of humor that makes every visit feel less like a dental appointment and more like a visit with family. Even during procedures, she has a remarkable ability to ensure you feel completely at ease, and you hardly feel any discomfort. If you're looking for the best dental care, we highly recommend Affinity Dental Studio. We are confident that you will not be disappointed :)

I haven’t see a dentist for over 4 years due to extreme nervous and bad experience when young. But something happened and I’m lucky to have Dr. Alina and her team treat me. Well designed clinic and relaxed atmosphere, Chantel gave me a warmest welcome, followed by Dr. Alina’s patiently explain and we were able to make plans then get treated the following week. Everything went great and I realize how important the oral health is. I’m not afraid anymore, thanks Affinity Dental Studio!

Here's a review you could use: --- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had a fantastic experience at this dental office. Dr. Allina was extremely friendly and patient with my 4-year-old son. She explained every detail and every option to us and even took the time to play with him and check his paw patrol doggy for cavities, which he loved. After his procedure, he got to open the treasure box and pick a toy, which was a great touch. The dental offices are newly built and extremely clean. The staff was super friendly as well. Overall, I’d give this place 10 stars if I could! Highly recommend.
